PLEASE NOTE: You may select one of the following 18 workshops.
For those registered for Session 1 - Dragonboating, a lunch box will be provided at the meeting point prior to departure.
For all other workshops, lunch will be served in the Plenary room and will be followed by a presentation about Healing Arts after which you will go to your selected activity.
Plenary Session - Therapeutic Art in Breast Cancer

Session 1: How to Ride a Dragon (Boat) - FULL
Presenters: Chemo Savvy & Waves of Hope Dragon Boat Teams
Experience the joys of paddling in a dragon boat with 20 other women living with breast cancer. This program began in Vancouver about 12 years ago as has spread all over the world. Participation on a team offers fitness exercises, competitive racing, supportive company, good times and the opportunity to promote breast cancer awareness.
Wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear. (You may get wet.) Life jackets and paddles will be supplied.
About the Presenters: The Chemo Savvy Team just celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007. Waves of Hope was organized the year after. We look forward to sharing our expertise with you in the hopes that you start a dragon boat team in your community.

Session 2 - Aquacises - The Make Waves Program
Presenter: Ms Bonnie Hopps - The Arthrtis Society
Working out in water to regain or improve fitness will benefit anyone at any stage of their journey. Added bonuses are the supportive and social aspects of the program which was specifically designed for people post breast cancer surgery. Not suitable for anyone receiving/having radiation therapy or 4-6 weeks past treatment. Bring a bathing suit or shorts and top and a towel.
About the Presenter: Bonnie Hopps developed the Make Waves Program in 1996 and taught the program for 10 years. She has conducted Instructor Certification Sessions and developed an Instructor's Manual. Bonnie is currently the Fitness Program Coordinator for the Arthritis Society.
Session 3 - The Wonders of Walking
Presenters: Ms Kathleen Leathers & Ms Leone Banks - Prairie Pathfinders Walking Club
Enjoy the beauty of your surroundings as you experience one of the many routes throughout Winnipeg used by the members of PPWC. Walking provides great exercise, fresh air, good company , and is a great way to relieve stress. Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather rain or shine.
Participants will meet at the registration desk at the Winnipeg Convention Centre and walk for one hour along the River Walk, through a few residential areas and end up at the Forks. The group will go for coffee and visit at the end of their walk so do not forget to bring a few dollars with you.
About the Presenters: Prairie Pathfinders Walking Club was founded 10 years ago by 4 Winnipeg women. It now has over 600 members and conducts weekly walks, hiking adventures and weekend excursions. The Club has also produced books detailing routes and picnic sites in Winnipeg and Manitoba.
2:00-4:00 On-Site:Session 4 - Sharing and Healing Circle
Presenters-Elders: Ms Stella Blackbird (Keeseekoowenin First Nation), Ms Gladys Cook (Sioux Valley Dakota Nation), Ms Audrey Bone (Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation);
Additional Presenters: Dr. Fred Shore & Ms Lucy Shore (Métis); Ms Leona McIntyre (Métis); Ms Wanda Phillips-Beck (Hollow Water First Nations); Ms Trudy Lavallee (Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs).This participatory session will begin with a traditional blessing followed by teachings offered by three well-respected Aboriginal Elders: Stella Blackbird, Gladys Cook, and Audrey Bone. A rich and meaningful circle will be initiated through testimonials of cancer experiences by members of the Canadian Cancer Society's Aboriginal Advisory Council, including cancer survivors and spouses/family members of those lost to cancer.
Two cancer survivors currently working with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs will also share their stories.
Participants of the sharing circle will have an opportunity to share their personal cancer journey with the group. A question and answer period will round out the circle session, that will be completed with a closing prayer.
Session 5 - Look Good Feel Better (30237)

Those registering must be a cancer patient (present or survivor) and should not have attended the workshop in the past.
Session 6 - Taoist Tai Chi - TaiJiQuan for Health (30923)
Presenter - Bruce McFarlane - The Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada
Taoist Tai Chi (TTC) is an ancient art that provides us with a powerful avenue for the maintenance and restoration of health. Dr. Bruce McFarlane, a rural family physician since 1969, presently works in the central Arctic. He has practiced TTC for 15 years now and is a medical advisor to the Health Recovery Program offered by the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada. During the 2 hour session, participants will see the TTC set being done, learn of the health benefits of an active life, hear from others how the daily practice of TTC has helped them and have the opportunity to learn a few of the movements of the set. There will be lots of time for questions and discussion. Come with comfortable shoes.

Session 9 - How Pilates Can Work for You
-Ms Ruth Baines - Pilates Manitoba
Pilates is a combination of stretching and strengthening exercises which emphasize body symmetry and abdominal control. Exercises can be modified to accommodate different body types, fitness abilities, and ranges of motion. Wear socks or bare feet and loose, comfortable clothing.
About the Presenter: Ruth Baines is a highly qualified pilates instructor who has been conducting a special class for women post breast cancer surgery for the last several years.

Session 16 - Resistance Training

Join the Chemo Savvy Trainers for a resistance training session. Exercise has been proven to have benefits both during treatment for cancer and on the road to recovery. Using dynabands (supplied) you will be introduced to a variety of exercises to regain upper body strength, whole body fitness and general overall health. These can be done anywhere, alone or in groups. You can even pack your dynaband and exercise sheet in your suitcase when travelling!
About the Presenters: Heather Welch is a highly qualified fitness instructor who has been involved with training the members of Chemo Savvy for 9 years. Karen Piper has also been a trainer for many years. She is and expert in body building and weight training.
Session 17 - Yoga - Healing the Disconnect Between Mind and Body
Presenter -Ms Karen Fletcher RN - University of Manitoba
Explore mind-body practices designed to facilitate the mind's capacity to effect health. Stress, coping, pain contol, reducing risk factors for cadiovascular disease, improving sleep are some of the factors which individuals can be influenced by facilitating the mind-body connection through yoga.
About the Presenter: Karen Fletcher is an oncology nurse who has practiced yoga since 1973. She has been a yoga instructor for 20 years, and has been assisting in the Yoga and Cancer Program of CancerCare Manitoba for the past 5 years.
