Winnipeg, the warmest place to meet!
Known as the gateway to the west, Winnipeg has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years. Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba, is home to 700,000 people and over 65% of the population of the province.
Although a part of the Prairie Provinces, with a rich history of grain and farming, Manitoba is home to a million lakes and a lake life that is the envy of many an angler. Whether it’s cycling, walking or jogging along one of the many kilometers of river walk, sightseeing from a touring boat or snowshoeing and skating in the winter, the river is not only part of daily life in Winnipeg, but also the key reason for the settlement of the city at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.
Today, we call the junction of these two mighty rivers, The Forks, where for thousands of years people have been meeting, trading and living large. Once a rail yard, this reclaimed section of our city is now home to markets, restaurants, unique shopping, attractions and a national park. A National Historic Site, The Forks is a year-round gathering place for entertainment including open-air concerts, The Manitoba Children’s Museum, the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, summer buskers and winter fun.
Described as the “cultural cradle of the nation” Winnipeg has a long tradition of developing its arts community. Supporting more than 36 museums, 17 theatres and countless art galleries, dance companies and music organizations, Winnipeg is home some of the oldest and most established theatre and dance companies in Canada. Whatever your taste or the time of year, Winnipeg has something for everyone. The fall and winter provide some of Canada’s best theatre and dance but when the indoor arts season ends, the excitement moves outdoors including Shakespeare in the Ruins, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, Rainbow Stage and much more.
The Exchange District is National Historic Site and the jewel in Winnipeg’s architectural crown. At the turn of the last century, Winnipeg was home to some of the most prominent architecture in Canada. Today, this district showcases the finest collection of pre-1913 architecture found anywhere in North America. But don’t let the history fool you; the Exchange, as it’s known, is a thriving neighbourhood and home to art galleries, restaurants, clubs, stores, offices and lofts.
Winnipeg has one of the highest numbers of restaurants per capita than any other city in North America. With such an appetite, our restaurants, over 1100 of them, cater to every taste imaginable. From Ukrainian perogies to Thai cuisine to regional specialties, our strong ethnic background translates to great Winnipeg traditions and a diverse range of cultures that bring you the world through food. Local chefs have gained recognition for taking the freshest local ingredients and creating unique regional cuisine, with a multicultural influence reflective of our city and our heritage.
We invite you to come explore Winnipeg - a thriving community located at the southern part of the province, easily accessible by car, air or train. Delegates living in the far corners of North America will arrive refreshed and ready to work. Winnipeg is easy to get around, yet has many of the amenities of cities twice its size.
